The distinctive Kalash tribe in the Chitral district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, living in the three remote valleys known as Bamburet, Brir and Rambur, is unique in many aspects. Fewer in numbers yet ambiguous by origin, the Kalash people claim to be decedents from wandering armies of Alexander the Great but at the same time, there are other assumptions leading to uncertainty. Their Polytheist religion based on myths and superstitions, cultural values, and rituals, distinguish them from the rest of the population in the region. Kalash people have a fair complexion resembling that of Europeans. Their very own Kalasha language, unique architecture, appealing costumes, festivals, and natural beauty – are all alluring enough to attract tourists from within and outside Pakistan. The Kalash valleys are accessible by 4WD jeeps from Chitral offering a number of opportunities to explore including beautiful day hikes.
