Fairy Meadows Hunza Tour

Itinerary

Drive from Islamabad to Naran, upon arrival transfer to hotel for check in. It will be about 6-7 hours journey, yet road traffic sometimes causes delays. Lunch will be had at a convenient place, preferably at PTDC Balakot. Afternoon at leisure, overnight stay at the hotel.

This is going to be an exciting day and will provide opportunities to explore several interesting attractions on the way. After breakfast at Naran, drive to Babusar pass, enjoy the scenic view at the top, and proceed to Raikot Bridge to transfer to Fairy Meadows. The entire section of the road from Naran to Babusar Top, running along the Kunhar River, is scenic and full of nature. There are several points to make short stopovers, but Lulusar Lake is a must explore point before proceeding to Babusar Top. The top at 4,173 m is the best spot to have a 360-degree view of the surrounding mountain peaks. On a clear day, one can spot the summit of Nanga Parbat (the killer mountain) from the top. Drive down via the other side of the top to the Karakoram Highway (about 35 km taking approximately one hour) and drive along the Karakoram Highway to Raikot Bridge - the switch/pickup point to drive up to Fairy Meadows. Only Willis Jeeps shuttle between Raikot bridge and Tatto, no tourists can drive personal vehicles and can only be parked at the Raikot bridge. The rough jeepable track up to Tatto from Raikot bridge is about an hour adventurous drive and then it is about 3-hour hike up to the campsite at the meadows. Overnight stay in huts at the meadows.

Fairy meadows BC at 3300m is a beautiful day hike providing scenic views of Nanga Parbat (Killer mountain) and annexing peaks along with beautiful Raikot Glacier running all the way from basecamp to Fairy meadows. Usually the Killer Mountain gets clear in the early mornings and it glitters when the first sun rays hit the summit of the mountain. It is about 2-3 hour hike from Fairy Meadows to Nanga Parbat basecamp. One can make it back to the meadows for lunch if started early morning.

Walk down to Tatto and drive to Raikot Bridge the same way. The section of the road from Raikot to Hunza is scenic, dotted with several attractions, and the entire journey may cost the full day. Gilgit is 78kms and Hunza is another 100kms. The junction point of three mountain ranges (where the Karakoram, Hindukush and the Himalayan mountain ranges meet) is about 45km short of Gilgit while travelling from Raikot to Gilgit. There are several attractions in Gilgit one might want to explore. Kargah Buddha (from 7th century) in Gilgit is a unique Buddha figurine to visit. There are several stopovers to make along the KKH while travelling from Gilgit to Hunza and further to Khunjarab Pass. Rakaposhi viewpoint on the KKH would be an ideal stopover for lunch. Upon arrival in Hunza, check in and visit nearby Baltit Fort. The more than 700 years old fort has for centuries been the palace of local rulers (Mirs) and was abandoned in 1945. It has a guarding view of the valley and has much to astound the visitors. In 1990s it was renovated and declared a UNESCO award winner. Currently, Baltit Fort is serving

Khunjerab is the highest metal border crossing connecting Pakistan with China. The road from Hunza to Khunjerab is decked with natural attractions including ancient Buddhist Rock Carvings and petroglyps on the KKH, Attabad Lake, Gulmit Valley, Husseni Valley, Passu Valley, Passu Cathedrals, Passu Glacier, Sost Bazaar, towering mountains along the highway, valleys along the Hunza River, glaciers, bridges, and tunnels. The Khunjerab border itself serves as one of the national Parks housing the rare blue mountain sheep and the snow leopard. It is a rewarding full day excursion for adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers. Return to Hunza for overnight stay.
Those who may find it difficult to drive up to the 4,737 m high Khunjerab border due high altitude have the option to stay back and explore lower parts of the valley including Passu Valley, Borith Lake, and visit the top of Kamaris Valley in Gulmit. Return to Hunza for overnight stay.

Early morning drive up to Duikar Valley. Duikar has been a summer pasture of the Hunza valley now serving as a viewpoint wherefrom all the mountain peaks including Rakaposhi, Diran, and Golden Peak can be seen with best view. The early sun rays’ hitting the summit of Rakaposhi and Diran is quite dramatic. Drive back to hotel for breakfast and visit Chhumar Khan (nearby village). Drive to explore the 800 years old Altit Fort and Altit Kha Basi for Lunch at the Kha Basi Café. The Kha Basi Café at in the premises of Altit Fort is a state of the art restaurant serving traditional organic food made by local women trained by Serena Hotel. Explore the Altit Model Village and the exclusive wood carving workshop run by local women carpenters. Drive back to hotel for overnight stay.
Afternoon drive to the Hoper Valley in Nagar, located across the River, the other side of Hunza Valley to enjoy scenic beauty and sun setting on the Golden Peak. Its terraced fields, fruit orchards, and the scenic view of the Golden peak and glacier from the end point to the valley are quite rewarding. Drive back to hotel for overnight stay.

The Gilgit-Naran Road is full of scenic views including the Babusar top, Lulusar Lake, Jalkhad, Naran, Lake Saif ul Muluk, Kaghan and several other stopovers. Drive the same route to Naran for overnight stay.

The journey from Naran to Islamabad is again scenic and takes around 7-8 hrs with an average pace. End of services
