Overview
Mountain Valleys Adventure is an extraordinary 20-day overland safari through the hidden valleys, ancient settlements, and dramatic mountain frontiers of Gilgit-Baltistan. Designed for travelers seeking depth beyond the usual tourist route, this epic journey explores the meeting ground of the world’s three greatest mountain systems — the Karakoram Range, Himalaya, and Hindu Kush. From alpine lakes and glaciers to Silk Route forts and living cultures, this itinerary reveals a side of Pakistan few ever experience.
The journey begins in Islamabad before entering the lush valleys of Kaghan, where the road follows the emerald waters of the Kunhar River toward Naran and Batakundi. Pine forests, waterfalls, and green meadows introduce travelers to the softer landscapes of the Himalayan foothills before crossing into the wilder mountain world of Astore Valley. Here lies Rama, a peaceful alpine plateau framed by forests and the mighty massifs surrounding Nanga Parbat, the ninth-highest mountain on Earth.
The route then ventures through the legendary Deosai National Park, known as the Land of Giants. This vast high-altitude plateau is one of the world’s most unique ecosystems, where wildflowers bloom in summer, marmots roam the grasslands, and the sky stretches endlessly above turquoise lakes such as Sheosar Lake. Descending into Skardu, travelers enter Baltistan, a region shaped by Tibetan influences, apricot orchards, stone villages, and glacial rivers.
Skardu and its surrounding valleys showcase extraordinary contrasts: the desert dunes of Katpana Desert, the crystal waters of Kachura Lakes, and the commanding ruins of Kharpocho Fort. Further east, Khaplu reveals the elegant Khaplu Fort and historic Chaqchan Mosque, reflecting centuries of Central Asian and Persian artistic influence. In Shigar Valley, riverside settlements and the dunes of Sarfaranga create an unexpected desert-in-the-mountains landscape.
Moving westward to Gilgit, the expedition pauses at the symbolic junction of the Karakoram, Himalaya, and Hindu Kush ranges — a geographic marvel found nowhere else so dramatically. The fertile valleys of Phander Valley and Gupis offer sapphire lakes, trout streams, and a slower rural rhythm rooted in mountain hospitality.
The final chapters unfold in the legendary valleys of Nagar and Hunza. Minapin sits beneath glaciers and the shining pyramid of Rakaposhi, while Hunza Valley enchants visitors with terraced orchards, elegant villages, and some of Asia’s finest mountain panoramas. Historic treasures such as Baltit Fort, Altit Fort, and Ganish Settlement preserve the memory of Silk Route kingdoms and caravan trade.
Excursions to Hoper Valley, Khunjerab Pass, Hussaini Suspension Bridge, and the serene villages of Upper Hunza add adventure, walking trails, and unforgettable views of glaciers, jagged peaks, and highland culture.
More than a road trip, Mountain Valleys Adventure is an immersion into one of the most diverse mountain regions on Earth — where landscapes change by the hour, cultures differ from valley to valley, and every road bend reveals another wonder.
